Among
the more meaningful and important forms of particular craftsmanship,
Leccese Paper-Pulp an artistic Salentin craft deserves
a mention.
Originally designed to reproduce saints, Christs, and
holy Maries they were carried during processions resulting lighter
in comparison with the wooden ones and the colors were more lively
and real.
The workmanship follows certain phases, plastering, stucco work,
polishing, coloration and decoration to improve the item.
In the province of Lecce you can find carpenters,
carvers, potters, inlayers and weavers too.
In
some villages the working with a clay called "Figuli"is
handed down three generations. We can remenber these typical object:
THE PIGNATA to be used for cooking vegetables; URSULU
for containing wine, plates, OZZE jars to contain the must
used by the vine-growers, NINNOLI figurines represent holy
patrons, whistles that represent domestic animals, and other compositions.
Don't forget the famous repertoire of the PUPPETS in terracotta:
they are shepherds for the christmas crib representing work and
entertaining activities, together with angels, and scenes of the
Nativity that are shown at the fair of St. Lucy December 13th in
St. Oranzo square in Lecce to Christmas Eve (During the fair of
cribs and the shepherds).
Of notable importance is the so called LECCESE STONE
homogeneous and compact, to such a point that it can be worked with
a jointer plane, chisel and an axe, exposed to the air it assumes,
with time, a warm gilded colour. This gave life to an architecture
of an unusual type and sculpture towards the end of the XVIth C
and the end of the C XVIII called baroque Leccese.
Among the other forms of craftsmanship we can note:
Stone, wood, and wrought iron.

Especially in Maglie embroideries and lace worked in needle
point;
In Scorrano the frameworks in wood of the illuminations that
serve for the embellishment of the important international patronal
parties.
Other characteristic crafts "THE PANARI" particular
baskets used by the farmers for the transport of olives and grapes;
"LE FISCHE" made from rush to contain fresh ricotta.
