The pearl of the Jonio in. Greek "a beautiful city"
or "Kalè polis", originaly it was a messapico
centre, later a Greek colony, in 265 B.C it, became subdued by the
Romans. Its narrow and tortuous roads, white houses, give it an
Oriental charm. Built on a promontory and an isle joined by a bridge.
Around the ancient city you can see a beautiful scenic road "the
Riviera" with views of the sea and the coast.

The
cathedral dedicated to St. Agatha with an interior
dating from in 1629-1630;
The Greek fountain with bas-reliefs of classical age in a
baroque frame, is the most ancient monumental fountain of Italy
(reconstructed in 1560).
The castle, with cylindrical towers to defend the ancient
port, in front of Rivellino on the sea. Art exhibitions,
craftwork and cultural shows are organized in the castle in the
summer.
The
church of S.Maria del Canneto dating from 1600 where the
fishermen gather in prayer before going out to fish.
On the waterfront other interesting churches: the church of the
puritita rises in the face of the Jonio in the neighbourhoods of
an inlet (the beach of the purity ), the façade represents
the Virgin with child and to the two sides St.Giuseppe, and
St. Francesco of Assisi. The church of Saint Domenico,
of the Crucifix, of St. Francesco of Assisi.
Here, too, a series of buildings in baroque style, the Pirelli
building of 1500 with elegant balcony with double lancet window,
Tafuri building with its elegant rococo frames.
The crystalline sea and the beach of white sand in
Gallipoli allows a relaxing vacation but also a dynamic
one of sport (sailing, windsurf, water scooters, trips and excursions
by boat).

Not far from Gallipoli there is' the island of St.
Andrew, a natural park where many colored plants grow and where
a special kind of endangered race gull is reproduced.
Fish restaurants ,antique shops, pubs and discoes, holiday villages,
big hotels, campsites provide complete tourism.

It is the seat of the center of the "baroque prize"
where entertainers win prizes every year. At carneval choreography
accompany the allegorical wagons.
On July 24th and 25th the party of s. Christine evokes
ancient but still fascinating traditions.
